Out of the blue, but do you know the daemon AUs that are on AO3? If the Ambit crew had daemons, what do you think they would be?

i didn't, but google tells me it's a dark materials thing that's sort of like animal-alike manifestations? if i'm totally off, ignore me, but if that's what they are, then at least for my versions of the characters, it would be:

saint - i like the idea of a lion? i know it's not very practical for ship living but we are ignoring practicality in favor of vibes, and saint is very much a leo in my head.

jal - i mean it has to be a dog, right? they call him a golden retriever multiple times, and it fits. not like a puppy, though. kind of a worn-down not-young-but-not-quite-old dog that probably needs a good brushing.

nash - some kind of ferret or weasel because she likes tight spaces and shiny things and those just seem like ferrety attributes, plus she's wiggly and would bite you with no provocation whatsoever
